  • To give students a practical view and understanding of basic banking concepts, theories, principles and practices discussing how the banking system operates within an economic system, generally.
  • To give students a broad and practical understanding about key areas of banking equipping them with the ability to effectively apply relevant quantitative models, qualitative information and pragmatic judgments of the specific demands of the situation in the workspace.
  • To provide students with basic knowledge of the economic dynamics and underpinnings of modern banking operations, elaborating on how central bank regulations influences the operations of banks and exploring economic principles that can be applied in solving challenges and issues that confronts banks.
  • To give students a basic understanding of customer relations, marketing and risk management within the banking sector with a discussion on some techniques employed by banks to manage customers and banking risks.
  • To help students develop relevant transferable and practical banking and financial skills to enhance their own personal development and employability in the banking sector with an understanding of professional banking ethics.


Upon completion of this course students will;

  • Have practical knowledge and understanding of the essential concepts underpinning the core functioning and operations of banks.
  • Have a broader appreciation of the various processes, procedures, theories and practices that need to be applied within banks to achieve successful outcomes in the banking sector with adequate knowledge of the main concepts and analytical tools used in banking related decisions.
  • Have a basic understanding of the ethical issues which confront contemporary banking practice and awareness of general professional codes of conduct for bankers.
  • Be able to recognize and deal with customer related challenges using appropriate approaches and techniques, anticipating future trends and proposing alternative approaches to solving customer and market related issues.
  • Be able to demonstrate basic understanding of electronic and mobile banking systems with applicable and practical skills and knowledge of systems and their functionalities.
  • Be able to demonstrate the ability to plan and manage marketing and customer-driven campaigns and situations with originality and innovation in tackling and solving problems in varied banking environments with high efficiency and performance.


  • Banking Operations & Ethics                                        

>>>This module covers the operations of banks, professional ethics and standards of practice in banking with brief discussions on the development of banking systems, bankers and customer relationship management, marketing in banking, types of accounts and retail banking services, accounts operations, rudiments of bank telling, risk management in banking and basic principles of lending.

  • International Banking Practice                        

>>>This course examines the behavior of banks in the context of economic theory, the legal and institutional environment as well as the historical and systemic development from an international perspective, applying theoretical concepts of money as they relate to banking; covering topics like financial intermediation and the global financial system, international capital markets, forex trading, banking structures of developing countries etc.

  • Application of Investment Banking  Theory                       

>>> This course deals with basic concepts, practices and legal framework of investment banking covering topics such as investment theories and models; risks, returns and diversification, fund management, investment performance management; investment management principles, investment products; equity capital and characteristics, property markets, derivatives etc.

  • Managing Financial Institutions                              

>>>This course is designed to give students practical knowledge of managing varied units, aspects and functions of financial institutions. The course provides broad knowledge and skills in the practices of commercial banking, pension fund management, microfinance and savings company management with an emphasis on the nature, purposes, and objectives of the Ghanaian financial services sector; covering areas like nonbank financial institutions and their characteristics, financial regulation or deregulation as Central bank functions etc.

  • Electronic Banking Applications                        

>>>This course will explore the basic concepts of information systems and how they support banking operations with an analysis of electronic systems in banking institutions, information processing, data and IT security, system development, e-commerce, and general regulation of electronic and mobile banking systems specifically focusing on planning, designing, and implementation of Management Information System with emphasis on applications
